Color is intricately linked to our psyche. Whether it’s the association of a warm yellow with the summer sun or the cool turquoise of our dream seaside vacation, every color has a meaning. Each color weaves a tale, intertwining elements from our senses, spiritual beliefs, cultural backgrounds, historical contexts, current events, and personal experiences. In this vibrant post, we’re going to explore the basics of color terminology and the general psychology behind our color choices.

The Language of Colors

Saturation: This is all about the intensity and purity of a color. Maximum chroma (which sounds like it could be a superpower in an anime) means the color is at its most vibrant, with no hint of grey. Less saturated colors are more subdued, blending towards neutrals as grey sneaks in.

Tone: Tones are hues changed through the addition of white or black. More specifically, tones are the combination of tints and shades.

Tints: Tints are hues lightened with white.

Shades: Shades are hues darkened with black or grey.
Undertone: Undertones are like a secret color hidden within another hue. That subtle green peeking through a greenish-grey? That’s an undertone.

Cool vs. Warm Colors

We perceive red, orange, and yellow as warmer colors, with orange as the warmest of the three. Warm colors are generally more dynamic and eye-popping, effortlessly attracting the eye.

Green, blue, and purple are generally cooler, with blue being the coolest of the three. Cooler colors recede into the background. Undertones can change the temperature impression of a color. For example, a reddish-purple will seem warmer than a bluish-purple.
