My dad is obsessed with ChatGPT. Granted, this is also a man who talks to his Alexa like a roommate and does his best to antagonize all of the AI tech products in his life for laughs. The obsession was inevitable. So, as a gesture of fatherly goodwill, his gift to my startup was a subscription to ChatGPT Premium.
I was skeptical.
However, over the following weeks, I grudgingly realized that ChatGPT had become a regular ” team member.” 99% of my work time is a solo venture. Without a real team to brainstorm and bounce ideas off of, ChatGPT filled in that gap.
Several videos I’ve watched on the intersection of AI and the workforce discuss the idea of AI as a collaborative tool, and that’s how I work with ChatGPT. I don’t need it to create things for me. I don’t want it to. But I do sometimes need a research associate, brainstorming companion, tech support, or administrative assistant. That’s where ChatGPT comes in. Am I a master of prompts yet? Absolutely not. I still have much to learn, but here are the three main ways I use ChatGPT in my workday.
Research and Resource Gathering
Research is one of the most significant ways I use ChatGPT. For example, if I run into a new concept or term and need help nailing down the meaning, I ask ChatGPT to explain what it means. Usually, it turns into a more extended conversation where I might ask for examples or uses that are more specific to my business. Outside of defining concepts, I’ll ask ChatGPT for resource lists like the best podcasts or blogs to follow to stay on top of industry changes or the top 20 social media hashtags relevant to a specific post. This AI-driven approach keeps me ahead in the fast-paced digital landscape, ensuring that I have access to the latest industry trends and insights.
Brainstorming
ChatGPT’s help with idea generation is invaluable to me. While I have plenty of my own ideas, I’m also just one person. I like to bounce different ideas off ChatGPT, ask for new ideas, or gather feedback on current projects. If I’m stuck, I’ll ask for prompts to get started. For example, I’ll tell ChatGPT to design several fictional businesses for practice branding kits or logo design. Or I might ask ChatGPT to provide a list of social media post ideas or blog prompts.
Administrative/Business Assistance
From drafting cold emails to creating pricing tables based on industry standards, I also use ChatGPT as a virtual assistant in handling the administrative and business strategy aspects of freelancing. So much information and differing opinions are available on the best ways to run your business that I usually end up in an “analysis paralysis” situation. While I might not use the ideas or plans I get from ChatGPT, they at least give me somewhere to start.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I’m happy with my foray into ChatGPT. They’ve just released several updates that I’m looking forward to exploring. ChatGPT 4 can now search the internet, which will undoubtedly be interesting. Additionally, there are now several ChatGPT “personalities,” different ChatGPT models designed to address specific needs like a “Tech Support Advisor” and “The Negotiator” (cue General Kenobi entrance). So much to explore, so little time.
